Chechenia is the name of a federal republic in Russia, situated in the North Caucasus region. However, this region is also known by other synonyms like the Chechen Republic, The Chechen State, or The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Ichkeria was a term used for the unrecognized state declared by the separatist government of the Chechen Republic during the First Chechen War. Some also refer to Chechenia as the Chechen Autonomous Oblast or the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which it was named from 1936 to 1991.
